1. Museu Nacional de Arte
There are a number of interesting museums in Maputo. One of the best is the Museu Nacional de Arte, which highlights the country’s finest contemporary artists, including Chissano and Malangatana. To view more sculptures by Chissano, visit the museum dedicated just to him in Matola, a suburb of Maputo. His works are displayed in his family’s residence there. For more paintings by Malangatana, visit his home and museum on Rua de Camões. There are also several Chissano sculptures on display at the house.
2. Museu de Historia
A Malangatana mural decorates the Museu de Historia Natural as well. The recently renovated museum is one of the finest in the country, and its garden and Manueline architecture are truly beautiful. The collection includes a particularly interesting collection of taxidermy specimens, including elephant pieces that are unique in the region.
3. Tunduru Botanical Gardens
The Tunduru Botanical Gardens is a public park and garden which provides serenity and shade to the traveller. Designed by Englishman Thomas Honney in the late 19th Century, these gardens are a must-see for visitors to Maputo, with a statue of Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique, situated at the entrance to the park. To top it all off, visitors will also discover tennis courts located within the gardens.
4. The Fortaleza
The Fortaleza is a Portuguese fort which has cannons pointed out to sea. It is situated near the centre of town and contains the remains of Ngungunyana, ruler of the old Gaza Empire, who tried and failed to defeat the Portuguese at the end of the 19th century.
5. Cathedral of Maputo
The Cathedral of Maputo is a must-stop for tourists. It is situated just near the Municipal Council Building and boasts amazing architectural beauty, as well as spectacular white colour in the form of a cross.
