The Great Barrier Reef is a site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. As the world’s most extensive coral reef ecosystem, the Great Barrier Reef is a globally outstanding and significant entity. Practically the entire ecosystem was inscribed as World Heritage in 1981.

Location

The Great Barrier Reef located on the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia. The 2,300km-long ecosystem comprises thousands of reefs and hundreds of islands made of over 600 types of hard and soft coral.

About Great Barrier Reef

  • The Great Barrier Reef is of superlative natural beauty above and below the water, and provides some of the most spectacular scenery on earth. It is one of a few living structures visible from space, appearing as a complex string of reefal structures along Australia’s northeast coast.
  • This diversity of species and habitats, and their inter-connectivity, make the Great Barrier Reef one of the richest and most complex natural ecosystems on earth. There are over 1,500 species of fish, about 400 species of coral, 4,000 species of mollusk, and some 240 species of birds, plus a great diversity of sponges, anemones, marine worms,
crustaceans, and other species. Some 242 species of birds have been recorded in the GBR. No other World Heritage property contains such biodiversity.
  • Because of its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the worlds most sought after tourist destinations. A visitor to the Great Barrier Reef can enjoy many experiences including snorkelling, scuba diving, aircraft or helicopter tours, bare boats (self-sail), glass-bottomed boat viewing, semi-submersibles and educational trips, cruise ship tours, whale watching and swimming with dolphins.
  • The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.
  • Today the Great Barrier Reef forms the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem. Biologically the unique diversity of the GBR reflects the maturity of an ecosystem that has evolved over millennia; evidence exists for the evolution of hard corals and other fauna.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is from June to November, when the weather is mild and visibility is generally good. Avoid visiting from December to March when northern Queensland has a distinct wet season, bringing oppressive heat and abundant rainfall.

About Queensland in Australia

The state was named in honour of Queen Victoria, who on 6 June 1859 signed Letters Patent separating the colony from New South Wales. The 6th of June is now celebrated annually statewide as Queensland Day. Queensland is home to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforests. … you’ll find it in the stories, the smiles and the history of the Indigenous Australians who share their culture with you. … Cairns & Northern Beaches. Queensland’s tropical rainforests contain most of the world’s present day relicts of the ancient Gondwanan forests. The rainforests contain the most complete and diverse living record of the major stages in the evolutionary history of the word’s land plants, as well as one of the most important living records of the history of the marsupials and the songbirds. High concentrations of endemic monotypic genera and primitive plant families reflect the refugial nature of many parts of the ecoregion.
